B.M. Simpson

USAF

Fiction

USAF retired author B.M. SIMPSON has been writing songs, poems and short stories since 1982. He is the author of the series Island Dogs, A Caribbean Tale. The set includes the novels Island Dogs, Avis Humphrey and Bella Vita. He has also authored the novel The Reporter and a series of children’s books for his ArtPlayStories. Simpson uses a unique moving dialogue to develop characters who are flawed, humorous, relatable and “normal”, and weaves a plot with such a detailed storyline and unexpected twist that his colorful characters are brought to life with his words. His advice to people who read his writing, “Don’t take life too seriously. It will be over before you know it.”

Simpson was born and raised in small-town New England where he grew up and spent much of his time outdoors playing sports, walking the Maine woods and enjoying the river in front of his home. He joined the Air Force and received two degrees from CCAF. He has spent many years living, working, and traveling in the Caribbean and feels at home with the peaceful vibe, sun, sea, and warm breezes of the islands.

Simpson is currently working to finish his fifth novel and plans to publish and release a collection of his short stories in 2024.

My Review

Island Dogs

B.M. Simpson transports us to a scene of toes in the sand, sun kissed skin, a rum filled beach bar, and characters destined for a movie screen. The character development is phenomenal, and you finish the book feeling like you’ve known Pellet and the gang for many years past. Thankfully this is just the first book in the series, so there is hope you’ll meet again. Island Dogs comes with unexpected plot twists that will make you laugh, anticipate and even dread what is to come. As these island dogs partake in some beer infused soul searching in paradise, in between the pages Desmund might just have the perfect words of wisdom to offer you.

Island Dogs
Avis Humphrey

Avis Humphrey

U.S. Veteran B.M. Simpson has done it again. He has perfected the art of creating an array of characters that you know all the way to your heart. From underdogs you root for, to the friend that adds meaning and light to your days, to the nuisance you avoid eye contact with – B.M. Simpson has a talent for meticulously weaving every character into an intricate tapestry in which every single character has an unpredictable and meaningful role.

“Avis Humphrey” was no exception. The worst part about the Island Dog novels is having to say goodbye to characters we have come to love at the end of each book. While the setting and characters of the first “Island Dogs” novel feel a world away from the world of Avis, the reemergence of story lines was brilliant. Can’t wait for the next novel from this talented author!

Bella Vita

The Gang is together again! I have loved each and every one of the Island Dog books that just keep getting better with each novel. B.M. Simpson’s has such incredible character development, you truly feel like you are reliving the adventures (or misadventures) of people you know and care about. As always in the Island Dog books, there is a full range of emotions from humor, to sadness, hope and despair, but ALWAYS good company. Hoping this isn’t the end for the Island Dog crew, they have become friends that I truly will miss!
Bella Vita
The Reporter

The Reporter

As always, B.M. Simpson’s character development puts him among the best. He has an incredible talent for introducing us to people we want to root for. Poppy’s character was bigger than life and somehow made this novel feel like it is supposed to be a Hollywood movie – I could actually imagine the adaptation of this as I read it.

This book is a world away from B.M. Simpson’s Island Dog series but the characters development and writing style make you feel like if the books crossed paths, I would be more excited than surprised! Can’t wait for the next B.M. Simpson release!

Vermeebee Land

My kids LOVED this story. The whimsical characters but a story with depth, made it a fun but meaningful story. They had fun creating the illustrations, these ArtPlayStories have been a traveling favorite in our family – something fun to do on roadtrips and trains without having to be plugged in to the electronics. The only thing that would make it better is if there was a way for them to share their illustrations with you – because they are so proud of their creations!

Vermeebee Land
Jellybean

Jellybean

Of the ArtPlayStories, this one was my favorite. The main characters seemed to be plucked right out of fairytale and put into a world that is gray and ordinary. As they journey to find where they are supposed to treasure their jellybean they teach the young readers that not perfect is still something to enjoy, the journey requires patience and love is the best travel companion. As with the other ArtPlayStories my kids enjoyed the chance to bring the story to life with their own illustrations – this book line is such a brilliant idea!

The Children in the Shed

My daughter actually brought this book to school to show off her illustrations. I love that these books give children the chance to read a story with substance, but also to use their imagination and really envision the story being told. The books include several pages that allow the kids to become the illustrator (it even gives them a spot to fill in Illustrated by…….. – such a clever addition).

These books have become a favorite for gift giving in our house!
